It was only a matter of time before one of the boutique winemakers high atop Pritchard Hill, in St. Helena, used her nose for a different sort of blend. In an industry first, Ann Colgin, of IX Estate's Colgin Cellars, has teamed up with Alexandra Balahoutis, of Venice Beach's Strange Invisible Perfumes, to create Essence of IX, a botanical scent with notes of roses, white sage, black currants, and ripe cherries that launches this month. The blend also includes French Oak essence triple-distilled from a wine called Esprit de Cognac that was aged in French oak barrels near Colgin's property. So even if you're still waitlisted for Colgin's impossible-to-obtain wines, you can smell as though you live on the estate.
