Colgin fans will delight in the 2009s and 2010s, two vintages that are fabulous here. The 2009s capture the silkiness and early approachability of the year. They are incredibly appealing wines. The 2010s will probably prove to be even better. I tasted the 2010s from preliminary blends and then in several pure component lots. Let's just say there is a lot to look forward to. There is no expense spared at Colgin, and it shows in these striking wines. This is a great showing from Ann Colgin, her husband Joe Wender and their winemaker Allison Tauziet.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is a gorgeous wine laced with dark red fruit, flowers and spices. It reveals the silkiest of tannins and remarkable grace throughout. All of the aromas and flavors wrap around beautifully to a deep, sensual, totally dazzling Cabernet. In 2009 the blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. The 2009 Cariad Red Wine is a blend of fruit sourced from Thorevilos and Madrona Ranch in St.Helena. IT is deep, sensual and beautifully balanced in its dark black fruit, menthol, spices and licorice. This is a much firmer and more structured wine than the Tychson Hill. It doesn't have that wine's sheer early appeal, but it does have the structure to age gracefully for years. Smoke, savory herbs and licorice are some of the notes that frame the explosive finish. The blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. The 2009 IX Estate Red Wine is another breathtaking wine. It is the coolest, most inward of these 2009s. Graphite, tar smoke, savory herbs, licorice and black fruit are some of the nuances that emerge from the IX Estate. Here, too, the tannins are quite imposing at this stage, but the integration of fruit and structure is superb. This has more than enough stuffing to age for a number of years. The 2009 IX Estate is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill bursts from the glass with dark red fruit, freshly cut flowers and mint. This is remarkably harmonious and well-balanced wine graced with exquisite class. It boasts dazzling purity and exceptional overall finesse. The 2010 is absolutely singing today. In 2010 the blend is 94% cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. The 2010 Cariad Red Wine is equally impressive. Fine, silky tannins frame an expressive core of dark red fruit, mint, graphite and minerals. This, too, is remarkably polished, with an extra degree of elegance and sheer finesse relative to the 2009. The round, seamless finish leaves a lasting impression. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. The 2010 IX Estate Red Wine is pure, focused and direct. It reveals stunning depth and persistence in a slightly understated style for this bottling. Blackberries, spices, white flowers and graphite are some of the notes that inform the beautifully delineated finish. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
