Herb Lamb Vineyard, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

1993 Herb Lamb Vineyard, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes from the Estate:

Dried cranberry, plum, fennel, tobacco and spicy oak notes on the nose along with the tight grained tannins give this wine a Bordeaux-like feel. The wine is showing beautifully right now, perhaps at its peak. Drink now through 2014. Service: Serve straight from the bottle, with care to avoid stirring up the precipitates. Food Pairing: Filet with green peppercorn.

We released 400 cases of the 1993 Colgin "Herb Lamb Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon in November 1996.

This up and coming superstar has fashioned an outstanding 1994 and an outrageously rich, sumptuous 1993. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard (which has been bottled and will be released in 1996) should turn out to be one of the most exceptional wines of the vintage. The color is an opaque purple. The nose offers up cassis, blueberry, black-raspberry, and toasty scents, followed by gorgeously rich, sweet (from extract, not sugar) flavors, full body, gobs of glycerin, and wonderfully ripe tannin in the intense finish that must last for 40+ seconds. It is an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon that will be approachable upon release; it will age for 20+ years. It is a tour de force in wine-making. It should come as no surprise that the genius behind these wines is Helen Turley. Readers are advised to get on the winery's mailing list in order to secure some of these extremely limited production wines, which are largely sold via the winery's mailing list. This up and coming producer is making 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Lamb Vineyard on Howell Mountain. Both the 1992 and 1993 are wines to seek out, although the tiny production means quantities are extremely limited. Both wines boast opaque black colors, and huge, sweet, jammy noses of cassis fruit, minerals, flowers, and new oak. Powerfully authoritative flavors that ooze glycerin and fruit extraction are also elegant and harmonious. The tannin is buried beneath an amazing amount of concentration. The 1993 finishes with slightly greater focus, delineation, and length, it's splitting hairs at this level. Both wines should drink well for at least 20 years.

The 1994 is a spectacular, promising Cabernet Sauvignon that has me drooling in anticipation of its release.
