Ann Colgin's 2014s are terrific. Winemaker Allison Tauziet decided to bottle the 2014s a bit earlier than normal. Because of that, the wines were already starting to close down when I tasted them in October 2016. Fortunately, I also tasted the wines from barrel prior to bottling, when they were much more expressive. Readers should be prepared to give these wines at least a few years in the cellar.

Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill
Vintage: 2014
Drinking Window: 2022 - 2034
Score: 96+
Tasting Notes: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is beautifully layered throughout, with striking aromatics and tons of nuance. There is no shortage of intensity, but, somewhat uncharacteristically, the Tychson Hill is the least opulent of these four wines. The 2014 has closed down considerably after bottling. From barrel, it was nuanced, classy and super-polished. I suspect it will be all of those things again in a number of years. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out the blend.

Wine: Cariad
Vintage: 2014
Drinking Window: 2019 - 2029
Score: 97
Tasting Notes: The 2014 Cariad is wonderfully expressive, open-knit and gracious. Sweet floral and spice notes give the 2014 much of its aromatics, while fruit is bright, vibrant and intense. I imagine the 2014 will drink well pretty much upon release. Today, the 2014 is showy, plush and inviting, but there is also plenty of depth to back it all up. Although I wouldn't dream of opening any of the 2014s early, but if I had to choose one wine to open before the others, this would be it. Cariad is a blend of fruit from several David Abreu ranches, with Madrona Ranch as the central component.

Wine: IX Estate
Vintage: 2014
Drinking Window: 2022 - 2034
Score: 97
Tasting Notes: A huge, dark wine, the 2014 IX Estate exudes full-throttle intensity and richness, with big mountain tannins that give the wine its overall shape and feel. Huge swaths of mineral-drenched fruit make a strong first impression as this dark, brooding wine gradually shows its personality. Graphite, sage and grilled herbs envelop a core of intense fruit. A wine of volume and breadth, the 2014 IX Estate is going to take at least a few years to come into its own.

Wine: Syrah IX Estate
Vintage: 2014
Drinking Window: 2019 - 2026
Score: 94
Tasting Notes: Colgin's 2014 Syrah comes across as especially fruit-driven in this vintage. Creme de cassis, plum, red cherry, spice and licorice give the 2014 its deep, plush personality. Powerful and plush, the 2014 offers tons of intensity. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 develops more varietal character over time. Today, it is incredibly primary.
